While you should never hesitate to call an ambulance for someone who is suddenly sick, injured or badly affected by drugs or alcohol, they will ultimately be responsible for the cost of St John’s attending. A single trip to hospital in an ambulance costs $949 and unfortunately it’s not covered by Medicare, Healthcare cards, Pharmaceutical or Pensioner Benefit Cards. No matter who called the ambulance, paying for it is the responsibility of the patient and they will go into debt until they pay the bill.
Even if you don’t have private health cover you can still insure yourself against ambulance bills by taking out “Ambulance only” cover, which means the health insurer will pay for the cost of any urgent trip. Many health providers offer this including Medibank which has a policy that costs $30.30 for six months of cover. You can find out more online here.
