How do toilets get blocked?

Common causes of sewer blockage (blocked toilets) include flushing wet wipes, nappies or sanitary items down the toilet.

Signs of a Blockage

  • A strong sewage smell in your home
  • Sinks, toilets and bath all slow to drain
  • Your toilet is not flushing properly or has overflowed
  • The toilet or drains are gurgling
  • Sewage overflowing in your yard.

How do I unblock the toilet?

If the cause of the toilet blockage is visible, you can attempt to resolve the situation by following the steps below.

  1. If the blockage is visible from looking into the toilet bowl, put on a pair of rubber gloves and remove it.
  2. If the issue still persists, keep your rubber gloves on and drop a small amount of dishwashing liquid and add half a bucket of water into the toilet bowl and leave it for a few minutes.
  3. Choose a heavy-duty plunger and place it completely over the hole at the bottom of the toilet bowl until it is submerged in water. Press down firmly and slowly. Repeat.
  4. Next, try an unravelled wire coat hanger to hook the blockage. This is most effective when the blockage is in the first 5cm-10cm of the drain.
