Chef Sophie Budd and the TasteBudds team continued their amazing place making efforts with a special event, Christmas Kitchen at Hampton Road, earlier this month.
Community volunteers and residents of Hampton Road, helped cook and serve a huge traditional Christmas lunch for the 198 people who call the lodging house home.
Members of the community had donated gift packs for the residents, as well new clothing, as to brighten their Christmas. Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt was a special guest and took the opportunity to chat to residents and volunteers over the lunch. All the leftovers were packed up and distributed to residents unable to make the lunch.
Sophie initially started volunteering at Hampton Road through a project with arts organisation FORM. Since helping to transform an unusable kitchen into a commercial-grade kitchen thanks to Lotterywest and Impact 100 grants, Sophie has continued to hold weekly cooking workshops for residents, as well as special events like the Christmas Kitchen, there. Foundation Housing and Sophie’s shared goal is to see the kitchen used daily by organisations who need a commercial space to prepare food and who may be able to involve the residents of Hampton Road, who are keen to continue to build their cooking skills.
