If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure how to manage your debts, there is somewhere you can turn to for free, independent financial counselling.
The National Debt Helpline is a not-for-profit community based service that’s available to people experiencing financial difficulty. They are not a lender and they don’t ‘sell’ anything or make money from you. They provide professional financial counsellors who offer a free, independent and confidential service and are there to help you get back on track.
You can get advice about your financial situation to help you fully understand your position and how to prioritise your debts. They can also speak with you about the pros and cons of the options that might work for you in addressing your debts (for example repayment plans, negotiating with creditors, bankruptcy and so on). They can also advise you about your rights and responsibilities around credit and debt.
Remember, you should never have to pay for this advice and you shouldn’t ever agree to pay fees to get financial counselling, advice about debt or to fix your credit file.
National Debt Call 1800 007 007 and you can also visit their website ndh.org.au which has lots of helpful information about managing debt.
