Pests

Depending on where you live, certain pests may become an issue for you. This can include but is not limited to:

• cockroaches
• ants
• rats
• mice
• wasps
• spiders
• termites
• bed bugs
• fleas

Common pest scenarios tenants are responsible for include:

• removing ants, cockroaches or spiders during the tenancy
• clearing bees and wasps if they begin building a nest after you have moved in.

These types of animals and insects can cause damage to the home. They may also be a risk to
health. If the problem gets out of control and you do not fix it, you may be asked to move out of your home.

Local council rules say that all homes and public spaces must be healthy and safe. This means that all homes must be free of pests. Foundation Housing tenants are responsible for making sure they do not have an infestation of pests.

To help stop pests from entering your home, here are some things you can do:

• put food away properly in a container or sealed if needed
• dispose of your waste correctly
• seal possible entrances
• keep your house clean and in good condition
• clear out drains regularly
• maintain your yard
• use spray and bait
• clear cobwebs
• do not bring in items from verge side collection as the items may have pests hiding within them.

If you do not look after the house properly, pests will begin to creep their way back in.

If you have discovered an outbreak of pests in your home due to your uncleanliness, activities or lack of prevention measures, you will be responsible.

Please contact the Property Services Team on 1300 895 205 and let them know the issue you are facing. Remember to provide images of the outbreak so we know what you are dealing with. The Property Services Team will be able to arrange for a pest control service to come out to your home.
