Pets

Foundation Housing recognises that pets are important to people and can enrich the lives of their owners.

Can I have pets at my home?

Under the Residential Tenancies Act, tenants are permitted to keep pets, subject to landlord (Foundation Housing) approval and the following limitations:

  • The type of pet
  • The size and type of the property – not all properties are suitable for pet ownership. This can include properties in transitional housing programs which are short term in nature.
  • Strata laws / rules at the property or complex
  • Local Council regulations.

Where approval to keep a pet is granted by Foundation Housing:

  • A pet bond (as per the amount defined in the Residential Tenancies Act) is payable. The bond may be used at vacate for pest treatment of the premises (e.g. flea or lice infestation), to fix damage or undertake cleaning required because of the pet.
  • The pet must be registered according to Local Council requirements, including being microchipped or neutered.

Permission to keep a pet may be withdrawn by FHL at any time if the pet causes:

  • an ongoing noise nuisance
  • damage to the premises
  • a danger to people or other animals
  • other issues of concern.

To request permission to keep a pet at your property, please complete the form below and send it to your Housing Coordinator.
