After moving to Australia with his family nearly 30 years ago, Cheriff faced numerous challenges—language barriers, cultural differences, and the constant struggle to find stability. Life had been a series of trials for his family, and while they eventually found a home, relationship tensions made it difficult for everyone to live under one roof. Determined to create a better situation, Cheriff set out to find a place of his own, landing a private rental.
But then, the pressures of rising living costs and the impact of COVID-19 led him into homelessness. His car became his home and his livelihood, doubling as both a workspace and a shelter. “I would work in my car, then sleep in it. Wherever I could park the car I would,” Cheriff recalled. Each night brought the uncertainty of where he might sleep, but Cheriff never gave up.
After months of sleeping in his car, he reached out to Centrecare, which ultimately connected him with Foundation Housing. When he got the call to view a room at Mount Lawley Lodge, Cheriff was hesitant. He expected cramped quarters and a mess, but to his surprise, the Lodge was spotless. His room was spacious, and for the first time in a long time, he had a safe place to park his car.
Cheriff’s has pride in his new home. “I can’t believe how clean and spacious it is. I even bring my friends here, and they’re shocked when they see it—they thought it was a hospital because of how clean it is!” he said with a smile.
Now, with a roof over his head, Cheriff feels secure and ready to rebuild his life. “Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to me,” he said, grateful for the fresh start and the stability he has long sought.
We are so happy for you Cheriff, that you have found the home you deserve. Your determination for a better life and your resilience despite the challenges life has thrown your way have been huge. We are excited to see how you use the Lodge to rebuild your life.
