From Struggles to Strength: Anne-Marie’s Creative and Empowering Journey

October 14, 2024

Anne-Marie’s life has been transformed since she became a tenant with Foundation Housing in 2013. Her journey from a challenging private rental to a stable, welcoming community has been one of empowerment, creativity, and self-discovery. But Anne-Marie’s path wasn’t always smooth.

Before moving to Foundation Housing, Anne-Marie struggled in a rental home that was physically unsuitable and financially draining. “It was quite difficult,” she reflects. “I always paid rent on time, but it was a challenge. The house had steps, and I had to climb over the bathtub to take a shower, which wasn’t easy with my bad back. It took three months to get the money they owed me back.”

Everything shifted when Anne-Marie moved into her Foundation Housing home. “Massive, absolutely massive! That’s the only way to describe the impact. My new home is designed with my needs in mind – no steps, no hard-to-turn doorknobs, and flip handles that make life easier with my carpal tunnel. After my surgeries, living somewhere that actually reduced my pain felt like such a relief.”

Not only has her new home given her physical relief, but it has also opened doors to new friendships and self-expression. Last year, Anne-Marie was introduced to the Morley Cardmaking Group through Foundation Housing, and it has brought her a lot of community connections and joy.

“I’ve gained so much confidence through cardmaking. I never thought I was creative. But through cardmaking, I discovered a new side of myself and made wonderful friends.”

Alongside her growing creative confidence, Anne-Marie is now involved in the CORT (Committee of Residents and Tenants), Foundation Housing’s tenant advisory group. Her outgoing nature made her a natural fit, and now she’s eager to contribute.

“I joined the CORT to have some input and learn more about what’s going on at Foundation Housing. Other tenants encouraged me because they said I always know what’s happening! I’d been asked before but was busy caring for my mum. Now, I’m excited to contribute ideas and improve my social skills. I’m not great in big crowds, but I hope this helps me build more confidence.”

When asked about what Positive Tenancy Pillar of Foundation Housing she resonated with most, Anne-Marie couldn’t single out just one. “All of them! I feel safe and the house is in a perfect spot between where my parents lived. I feel stable knowing I won’t be thrown out, which was always a worry with private rentals. And I feel equipped because I don’t have to stress about rent. It’s manageable, and financially, I’m in a much better place.”

Anne-Marie’s new property is not just a home but a renewed sense of peace, safety, and self-worth.

“I feel empowered,” she says with a smile. “And if I can help someone else along the way, even better!”
