Foundation Housing has officially opened its new Specialist Disability Accommodation in Kenwick, delivering purpose-built homes designed with residents to support them to live and age within their community.

Residents, families, project partners and representatives from government and the community came together to celebrate the official opening of Foundation Housing’s new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) in Kenwick.

The event began with Vaughn McGuire Welcoming us to Country and conducting a Smoking Ceremony, before guests gathered to mark the official opening of the new homes.

Developed in partnership with Ability WA, the project provides purpose-built accommodation for 10 residents, together with accommodation for two carers.

The development has been shaped around the needs of the people who will call it home. Residents, their families and those who understand their day-to-day support needs contributed to the design, helping create homes that support greater independence, dignity and choice.

Importantly, the project enables residents who have been part of the Kenwick community for many years to remain close to the people, services and connections that are important to them.

Foundation Housing CEO Chris Smith said the project demonstrated the importance of delivering housing that responds to the people who will live in it.

“These homes have been built with tenants, for tenants. They have been designed not only around what residents need today, but to adapt as those needs change and enable people to live and age within their community,” Mr Smith said.

“Ultimately, the success of this project won’t be measured by the features of the building. It will be measured by the lives people are able to live here.”

The homes incorporate accessible living spaces, private ensuites and courtyards, assistive technology, automated features and backup power, supporting residents to live as independently as possible.

The official opening follows the project receiving a Judges’ Award at the 2026 UDIA WA Awards for Excellence, recognising the approach taken to delivering the development.

Foundation Housing worked alongside Ability WA, Pulse Property Solutions, Corbel Property, M Carbone Designs and Tricrest Construction to bring the project to life.

Mr Smith said the project demonstrated what could be achieved when housing, disability support, design and construction expertise came together around a shared purpose.

“Everyone brought different expertise, but we shared one goal – to create the best possible homes for the people who would live here.”

The opening was attended by Hugh Jones MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Disability Services; Ron Sao MLA, Member for Cannington; Mayor Terresa Lynes, City of Gosnells; Ability WA CEO Jacqui Thomson; Foundation Housing Board members; residents and their families; and project partners.

For Foundation Housing, the development reflects its commitment to delivering not simply more housing, but the right housing – homes that enable people to live well, remain connected to their communities and have greater security for the future.

Most importantly, the opening marked the beginning of a new chapter for the residents who now call Kenwick home.
