Reflecting, Listening and Growing: Tenant Stories That Remind Us Why Our Work Matters

June 12, 2026

As Foundation Housing celebrates 40 years of housing and community, staff recently came together for our 2026 Mid-Year Event, themed Reflecting. Listening. Growing.

The day provided an opportunity to celebrate our achievements, reflect on our journey and hear directly from the people at the centre of our work – our tenants.

While we spent time discussing our progress and future direction, it was the stories shared by tenant panellists John, Robert and Steve that left a lasting impression.

Through honesty, courage and lived experience, they reminded us of the profound difference that safe, secure housing can make in a person’s life.

The Power of Housing Security

For many people, housing is something they rarely have to think about. For others, the uncertainty of not knowing where they will live can affect every aspect of daily life.

John shared the impact that housing security has had on him and his family.

“For all the time that you don’t have housing security, you’re on edge. Then one day you wake up, look out the window and know that pressure is gone.”

His words resonated deeply, reflecting the sense of stability and peace that comes from having a place to call home.

John also spoke about being able to look to the future with confidence.

“I have now got to the point of getting up in the morning and looking out the window and knowing that pressure is gone. I have found myself able to look further and make plans and say to my kids, ‘Just come over. It’s my place. It’s my home and it isn’t going to change.”

Housing Creates Opportunity

Safe and secure housing provides more than shelter – it creates the foundation for people to pursue their goals, education and aspirations.

Robert shared how having a stable home has enabled him to focus on his future and continue his studies.

“I’m living proof of how the system works. I’ve started my Masters in Mathematics. I couldn’t do that without a safe, stable environment.”

His story highlighted the opportunities that can emerge when people have the security and support, they need to thrive.

Hope, Recovery and Looking Forward

Steve spoke openly about his personal journey and the role that housing has played in helping him focus on recovery and wellbeing.

“Foundation Housing has given me the opportunity to live one day at a time and make the most of my day.”

His reflections were a powerful reminder that housing can provide much more than a roof over someone’s head – it can provide hope, dignity and the space to rebuild.

Why These Stories Matter

As an organisation, we often measure our impact through homes delivered, communities supported and services provided.

But behind every tenancy is a person, a family and a story.

The stories shared by John, Robert and Steve reminded us that housing is about much more than buildings. It is about creating stability, opportunity and belonging.

As we continue our journey and look towards the future, these stories reinforce why our work matters and the difference that safe, secure housing can make in people’s lives.

Thank you to John, Robert and Steve for sharing your experiences so openly and helping us reflect on the impact that housing and community can have.

40 years on, our purpose remains the same: improving lives through safe and secure housing.
