Replacing Fly Screens

This is a helpful guide for installing a replacement window flyscreen. Remember to always check with Foundation Housing if you are unsure if something is your responsibility.

Step 1 - Purchase the frame

Purchase the frame (aluminium or vinyl) if needed, screen and rubber spline (piping) if needed. You will also need to buy or borrow tools to complete the task.

Step 2 - Remove the frame

Remove this from the trench that surrounds the screen, using a screwdriver all the way around.

Step 3 - Clean

Use a paint brush to clean the trench once the spline is removed.

Step 4 - Lay the screen

Lay the screen over the frame. Leave approx. 50mm overhang of the area to be screened.

Step 5 - Indent the screen

Carefully use the spline-roller to indent the screen.

  • Indent the screen into the trench, making sure not to puncture, wrinkle or pull the screen out of shape.
  • It will take 4 to 5 passes around before the screen before it is securely indented.

Step 6 - Lay it on

Take your spline, and gently lay it into the trench.

Step 7 - Secure it

Take the spline-roller and gently press the piping into the trench. This will take 2 to 3 passes to ensure it is properly secured.

Step 8 - Trim

If the screen sets to your satisfaction, carefully trim the excess screen with a utility knife.

Step 9 - Re-install

Now you are ready to re-install your repaired frame and screen into place.
