For more than a decade, Glenda called her Foundation Housing property home. Over 11 years, it was a place of independence and familiarity – but as time went on, life became increasingly challenging.
With limited family support and only a distant connection to her brother, she was largely navigating life on her own. As her health and mental wellbeing began to decline, everyday tasks became harder to manage. Maintaining her home – something she had once taken pride in -became overwhelming.
In 2024, Glenda was referred to Foundation Housing’s Tenant Support team.
What followed was not a quick fix, but a compassionate, steady response. Rather than allowing the situation to escalate, Foundation Housing stepped in to understand what she needed to stay safe and supported. Working alongside external support services, including RISE, the team helped stabilise her situation – addressing the condition of the property, supporting her through difficult decisions, and ensuring her beloved dog was rehomed within family, where she now enjoys long walks by the river and time at the dog park.
But perhaps the most significant moment came next.
With the right support around her, Glenda made the brave decision to transition into residential care- something many people are understandably reluctant to do.
Today, Glenda is thriving.
Now living in a private room within a residential care facility, she is surrounded by opportunities for connection, care, and community. She shares all meals in the dining hall, has formed meaningful friendships – including with a neighbour across the hall – and spends her afternoons reflecting on life and sharing stories.
“I do love having other people around,” she says. “I have a much brighter outlook with someone to talk to every day.”
Recently, Glenda attended a ballroom dancing event at the centre – an experience that brought her genuine joy.
“I felt chuffed that I knew most of the songs, and I really enjoyed that. I’ll be looking out for it each year when they come back.”
Her journey is one of courage, change, and renewed connection.
It’s also a powerful reminder that housing is more than a roof – it’s about knowing when to step in, when to listen, and when to walk alongside someone as their needs change.
Through early support and strong partnerships, Foundation Housing ensured Glenda wasn’t facing these challenges alone – but was supported to take a brave step toward a safer, more connected life.
